Register by Monday, October 5, 2026 to vote in the November 3 General Election. Registration in Texas takes effect 30 days after the voter registrar receives your application — and the deadline is the last day your application can be received, not the last day you can post it.
Most people who think they need to register are already registered. Check first: look yourself up in the Texas Secretary of State's My Voter Portal by name and date of birth, or by your VUID or driver license number.
Who can register
To register to vote in Caldwell County you must:
- Be a citizen of the United States;
- Be a resident of Caldwell County;
- Be at least 17 years and 10 months old when you register — you must be 18 by Election Day to vote;
- Not have been finally convicted of a felony — or, if convicted, have completed all punishment including incarceration, parole, supervision, and probation, or have received a pardon;
- Not have been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated, or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
Points people often get wrong
- Deferred adjudication is not a final felony conviction — it does not disqualify you from registering.
- Having a legal guardian does not automatically disqualify you. Every guardianship order issued after September 1, 2007 must state whether the person keeps the right to vote.
- You can register at 17 years and 10 months. You just cannot vote until you turn 18.
How to register
Texas does not offer online voter registration
Your application must be delivered on paper — by post, in person, or through a Volunteer Deputy Registrar. A form you complete online must still be printed, signed, and delivered.
- Get an application. Download and print the Texas voter registration application from VoteTexas.gov, collect one from the Elections Office, or call (512) 668-4347 and we will mail one to you. Applications are also available at most public libraries, post offices, and high schools.
- Complete and sign it. An unsigned application cannot be processed. Include your Texas driver license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number.
- Deliver it to the voter registrar. Post or hand it in to the Caldwell County Elections Office, 1403 Blackjack St., Suite A, Lockhart, TX 78644. It must be received — or postmarked — by the 30th day before the election.
- Watch for your voter registration certificate. Your registration takes effect 30 days after it is received. A certificate is mailed to you showing your election precinct number and the districts you vote in. Keep it — it is the quickest way to look up your precinct.
Name and address changes
You moved within Caldwell County
Update your address with the voter registrar — correct and return your voter registration certificate, or submit a new registration application with your new address. Your precinct, and therefore your Election Day polling place, may change: check where to vote after you update.
You moved from another Texas county
Register in Caldwell County. If your new registration will not be effective by Election Day, you may be eligible to vote a limited ballot during early voting, at the main early voting location only. A limited ballot does not include county or precinct races.
You changed your name
Report the change by correcting and returning your voter registration certificate, or by submitting a new application. Bring identification in your current name when you vote — the name must be substantially similar to the name on the list of registered voters.
You moved out of Caldwell County
Register in your new county. Registering elsewhere in Texas will normally transfer your record automatically; you may also cancel your Caldwell County registration using the cancellation form described below.
Cancelling a registration
Cancel your own registration
Complete the voter registration cancellation form from the Texas Secretary of State's voter registration forms page, print it, sign it, and post it to the Elections Office at 1403 Blackjack St., Suite A, Lockhart, TX 78644.
Cancel a deceased family member's registration
If you received an Address Confirmation Form or a Voter Registration Certificate for the voter: write the voter's name on the form, write "deceased" across the front, sign your name, record your relationship to the voter beside your name, and return the notice to the Elections Office.
If you did not receive either document, send a sworn statement that the person is deceased — including the voter's name, registration address, and date of birth, signed, with your relationship noted — or a certified copy of the Certificate of Death with the same identifying details and your own name and residential address. Post either to the Caldwell County Elections Office, 1403 Blackjack St., Suite A, Lockhart, TX 78644.
Identification at the polls
Registration and identification are separate requirements — being registered does not remove the need to show acceptable identification when you vote. Texas accepts seven forms of photo ID: a Texas driver license, a Texas Election Identification Certificate, a Texas personal identification card, a Texas handgun license, a U.S. military identification card with photograph, a U.S. citizenship certificate with photograph, or a U.S. passport. Except for the citizenship certificate, identification may be expired by no more than four years; voters aged 70 or over may use otherwise-valid identification expired for any length of time.
If you cannot reasonably obtain one of the seven, you may complete a Reasonable Impediment Declaration at the polling place and present a supporting document. See the full identification requirements at VoteTexas.gov.
Become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar
Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDRs) are appointed by the county and may accept voter registration applications from the public. Training is provided by the Elections Office, and an appointment lasts through the end of the calendar year. To ask about VDR training, call (512) 668-4347 or email caldwellec@co.caldwell.tx.us.
